How is my Race Quilt made?

Your Race Quilt is custom-designed to best showcase YOUR t-shirts! Special care is taken when planning the layout and selection of sashing colors to be used. All quilts are made using quality cotton fabric for the sashing and backing. Batting will be selected according to the thickness you desire. All Race Quilts are machine quilted using a meandering stitch. This provides excellent stability and doesn't interfere with the t-shirt designs. The edge of the quilt is finished using two layers of fabric (to prevent wear) and hand-stitched. Our experienced quilters carefully complete each Race Quilt so that it will be enjoyed for years to come!

I have some t-shirts which have small logos. Can I still use them?

Of course! We can use logos of any and all sizes. In fact, having shirts with different sized logos adds variety and interest to your quilt.

Can I use both the front and the back of a t-shirt?

Yes! Simply send both to us. Each side will count as one t-shirt.

What do I have to do with my t-shirts before I send them to you?

Upon receiving your paid order, we will send you the specific details for preparing your shirts. Basically, t-shirts should be washed and cut. We ask that you cut off the sleeves of each shirt, and separate the front from the back. Then, send us the ENTIRE side of the shirt you would like included in the quilt. Doing this will greatly reduce your postage costs.

Can I add a special message on my Race Quilt?

Yes! We can include a special message, name or dates in your Race Quilt. The text is beautifully embroidered onto a separate block, or a label for the back. This is a great way to personalize a quilt as a gift, or to remember the races or special events shown on your t-shirts. There is a small $20.00 fee per embroidered message.

What is a 'block'?

A block is one square of the quilt, usually made up of one t-shirt.

What is 'sashing'?

Sashing is the fabric used between each t-shirt on the quilt. It is used to form a 'frame' around the shirts and to make each one stand out visually. The color of the sashing is different for each quilt, and is carefully selected based on a color found in the designs of the t-shirts. If you prefer a certain color for the sashing on your quilt, we are happy to use it. We use only 100% cotton for our sashing.

What is 'batting'?

Batting is like the "stuffing" of the quilt. It is made of either cotton or polyester, and comes in different thicknesses. It is what makes a quilt soft and fluffy, otherwise it would be just a flat blanket. Each customer selects the thickness of batting they would like for their own quilt!

What is a 'meandering stitich'?

A meandering stitch is a random, flowing stitch used when quilting. It provides great stability, so the quilt won't "bunch up" after being washed and dried. It will not detract from the design of the t-shirts.

What is 'interfacing'?

Interfacing is the material used to provide structure to each t-shirt block. T-shirts are stretchy and the quilt would not hold its shape without the interfacing. We use a light interfacing which provides structure without being "stiff."

Can I include something other than a t-shirt in my quilt?

Yes! We have made quilts using nylon sports jerseys, sweatshirts, hats, shorts, pants, jeans, scarves, satin jackets, and other items. If you have something unusual you'd like included, just ask!
